Update – How have the Permaculture Educational Structures changed in France in the years 2012 – 2014?
Interview with Benjamin Burnley, Universit? Populaire de Permaculture, May 2014 by Monika Frank
During these 2 years the number of introduction courses and permaculture design courses have increased, most of the trainings are full. Their are more foreign teachers coming to teach in France. From 2012 to 2014 the number of PDCs in France will have approximately doubled. In 2012 the number of visits on the web site of UPP was about 8 000 every month, in 2014 it?s around 13 000 visits every month.
Not exactly to respond to the demand, but in natural process of time there are more and more students that obtain their Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design, 4 in 2014 and have started teaching PDCs. In summer 2014 we are expecting around 5 more students to pass their diploma.
More and more different associations in France organize training courses with national and international teachers. We already had foreign teachers mainly from north America and Australia coming to France to teach training courses. This partnership has facilitated contact with diploma holders from Europe and the world, and helped to know each other, we had the opportunity to present the french eductional structures and how the network functions, in order to welcome foreign teachers in a more coherent way with the french network.
From the EPT meetings we learned how other countries organize their diploma pathway, the content of different curricula, the assessment criteria and tools used by other organizations. Now, new course formats are organized, like for example PDC followed by design implementation and practical hands on workshops. Their are discussions between the diploma holders to agree on assessment criteria. There is a new design and new tools implemented in UPP to accompany the students towards the diploma. We are in the process of proposing our companionship apprenticeship system to the European partner organizations.
